Legal and web policies

• Web accessibility

  A website must be accessible in order to provide equal access and equal opportunity to all its users, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. The University’s web accessibility policy explains its current accessibility standards and practice, the support available for users and training for web publishers.
• Consumer protection

  Guidance for staff on consumer protection legislation and how this affects our relationship with any potential and enrolled students. It includes advice for any published information, particularly information that is likely to change.
• Copyright

  An explanation of copyright laws and how they apply to the web. Includes information on what may be a breach of copyright and explains the principles of fair dealing.
• Data protection

  The Data Protection Act is concerned with personal privacy. Anyone who handles personal data must comply with the Act’s principles and legal obligations. The University can be fined up to £20 million or 4% of global turnover for a breach of the Data Protection Act.
• Freedom of information

  As a public body the University is subject to the Freedom of Information Act. There is further guidance on how to make a Freedom of Information request.
• Information security

  The policy and its sub-policies, Information Handling Policy (ISP-07) and Acceptable Use Policy (ISP-09 ) relate to how information is managed across the University, this includes content on the University websites and social media channels. The University information classification scheme shows how different types of information should be treated, for instance, only information classified as ‘public’ should be made available outside the University.
• Social media policy

  This policy applies to all University members (both staff and students) and to all social media communications that represent the University. Read the Social Media Guidance (PDF, 399kB) alongside the policy.
